{"id":2080,"date":"2014-10-17T15:09:48","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T14:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watever.org\/?page_id=2080"},"modified":"2015-05-07T13:39:06","modified_gmt":"2015-05-07T12:39:06","slug":"bamboo-bio-composite","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/watever.org\/en\/our-projects\/bamboo-bio-composite\/","title":{"rendered":"Bamboo Bio-Composite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><b>Bamboo Bio-Composite: for safe and sustainable shipbuilding,\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>adding value to the traditional know-how of the Bangladeshi ship&rsquo;s carpenters.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">This project is aiming to develop a new composite\u00a0: a bamboo based bio-compsite board, a natural resource available in the local area. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The developed assembling process will replace the traditional timber, which is\u00a0becoming too expensive for its decreasing quality, in local shipbuilding, while preserving the know-how of marine carpenters of Bangladesh<b>.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Traditionally, boats are built from planks of wood.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are specific boat shapes requiring specific know-how for each craftsman, each region and each location in Bangladesh. This naval heritage, transmitted orally over generations, is now disappearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Current boats made of composite materials, which are widely used in the \u00ab\u00a0North\u00a0\u00bb and bound to increasingly spread to Bangladesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\" style=\"color: #000000;\">The development\u00a0of a bamboo bio-composite will make the boat production\u00a0more accessible to populations , cheaper than boats made with fiberglass and more environmentally friendly, with an assembly process that preserves the know-how of traditional ship\u2019s carpenters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Overall objective of the<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><b> project: <\/b>enabling access to safe and lasting boats to population in need by developing a bamboo bio-composite, using the know-how of local traditional marine carpenters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><b>Specific objectives of the project:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Developing a bamboo based bio-composite, technically, economically and environmentally sustainable for shipbuilding.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">A<\/span>dding value to the traditional know-how of the Bangladeshi ship&rsquo;s carpenters<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> through the assembly process used, by providing a new and appropriated technology.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Outcomes resulting from the project:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bamboo bio-composite board, technically sustainable, is developed for shipbuilding.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A first prototype \u2013 inspired by a traditional boat (the \u00ab\u00a0Kusha\u00a0\u00bb) \u2013 technically, economically and environmentally sustainable, is developed, using this board.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Expertise in traditional shipbuilding is revalued by the awareness and training of ship\u2019s carpenters to use this new material, combining traditional and modern techniques (two others prototypes will be built).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">The impact of the project and the swarming of the new technology are evaluated.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Knowing that bamboo is present on all continent, t<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">his method can then be duplicated and adapted in many other countries, particularly in Asia, where demand for boats is consistent with the presence<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"> of<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> bamboo plantations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bamboo Bio-Composite: for safe and sustainable shipbuilding,\u00a0adding value to the traditional know-how of the Bangladeshi ship&rsquo;s carpenters.
